Geothermal provides 25% of electricity in Nicaragua first days in 2020

In the first few days of 2020, electricity generated by geothermal energy represents around 25% of the total electricity supply in Nicaragua.

As reported in Nicaragua, the country reports a significant increase of renewable energy as part of the total electricity mix. In these first days of 2020, renewable energy represents around 81% of total electricity generated.

With 33.2% sugar cane based biofuel is the largest contributor, followed by geothermal energy with 24.6%, wind power 22.5%, solar with 0.5% and hydro with 0.26%.

The diversification of the energy matrix in Nicraagua has helped to successfully manage the changes and ups and downs in hydroelectric generation, that is, no matter what happens from one source to another. At this time of the year there are better winds, the sugar harvest is on the rise and the volcanoes that always maintain a stable generation level of 18 to 24% of the National energy matrix.

Nicaragua continues to promote solar energy in its communities, maintaining hydroelectric plants and conducting studies to advance two new projects in the geothermal sector.

As for the wind, the land of lakes and volcanoes has the potential to generate more than 1,000 MW of wind energy. This season, when the winds blow, there is a greater increase in the production of renewable energy, especially wind, the four parks located in the Rivas isthmus use technology from firms such as Vestas (Denmark) and Gamesa (Spain), these contribute between 26 to 33% of the national energy. With support by the Nordic Development Fund, there are several feasibility studies to be worked on for new wind projects this year.
