Guatemalan authorities are already preparing to regulate the use of this type of seed, as through Agreement 270-2019 was created the Technical Committee on Agricultural Biosafety of Guatemala (CTBAG), which will evaluate the applications submitted by companies for import, marketing, sowing and production.
Álvaro Ramos, director of Phytozoogenetics and native resources of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (Maga), explained to Prensalibre.com that “… in addition, Agreement 271-2019 was issued establishing the procedures manual, which is expected to be published in the official newspaper over the next few days in order to become effective.”
Regarding the progress of this issue in other countries in the region, Alejandro Hernandez, professor and researcher at the Technological University of Costa Rica (Tec), said that “… Honduras has already developed its tools for living modified organisms (LMOs) for several years, in addition to Costa Rica. In the case of El Salvador, he is working to implement it.”
At the producer’s discretion, with the use of modified seeds, new possibilities are opened to increase crop yields, as well as to increase resistance or tolerance to diseases or climates.
